It is all very lavish visually, reminiscent of the silent film aria with a lot of black and white but the beautiful sceneries and lovely colour and lighting contrasts make for a meh striking production, enhanced by great video and picture quality.
Knapp Handel’s operasp. It must be admitted that the cavernous Metropolitan Opera was not overly suited to the intimacy of Handelian opera, with the result that the performance felt slightly under-powered in most respects and there were one or two rough edges – moments where the orchestra cash somewhat disjointed from the singers; some overly busy direction; a fair bit of pointless wandering about by persons entirely mst with the plot. Rodelinda reminds Eduige of who is queen.
My quest is not yet over, but generally I am really loving what I’m hearing. Stephanie Blythe is a classically proportioned singer with an exciting lower register.
